Carl Owen is a successful race director who from 1986 through 1996 produced and directed the Hill Country Triathlon. This 1.5 mile swim, 48 mile bike, and 10 mile run was the premier Ironman Qualifier in Texas for 10 years. Such athletes as Mark Allen Dave Scott, Scott Tinley, Scott Molina, and Paula Frazer have competed in the event, which was a hallmark of triathlon events in the 1980's.
His innovative actions set the standard for multisport in Texas and the nation. Carl, a Kona Ironman finisher, was the first race director to use chip timing and the first to design a swimming course with specific rescue craft assigned to specific areas, bringing about athlete safety innovations.
Carl's influence and innovations are observed in multisport events throughout Texas.
